RSVP (Retired Senior Volunteer Program)

This program is used in our schools so that seniors or retirees can help out our school system. We hear about budget cuts taking place and losing staff and we as a community need to ask what can we do to help our schools? Our children and grandchildren deserve the best eduaction we can give them.Ask your schools what we can do to help even if it is only one hour a week. There are many opportunities in the schools, read to the children, work in the library, help in the cafeteria. Baldwin City we are in a crisis in our schools, what are we going to do to make sure our children get the best we can give them?

"Our children and grandchildren deserve the best eduaction we can give them."

No, please, they don't deserve THAT!

Notmyname, you make an excellent point. Personnel cuts are coming for the schools and help will be needed. We are again faced with "do more with less." The community does need to rally and I applaud you for leading the way.

It really is admirable of you to do something like this for the children.

What would be really refreshing is if the state or federal govt would see people doing this sort of program voluntarily and then give back to these volunteers with tax credits for their time donated.

Great and generous idea. If you are an organized group, you should present this concept to the school board. What expertise do members of the group have? From reading to kids to talking about life experiences to specific academic topics. Tutors would be welcome. I think the teachers would appreciate having a pool of presenters to choose from. At least, I hope so.
