Voters to decide on sales tax Tuesday

Let me get this straight....

The renewed sales tax proposal would be to extend the .0050 sales tax.

And, the new one would be to add an additional .0025 sales tax for funds to enhance the quality of life for the town.

Am I understanding that correctly? So, for every $100 that is spent in town a person [visitor or local] would contribute .75?

I'm definitely not in the higher end of the social ladder [actually I'm hanging on the bottom rung], but to me this does not seem like a very high price to pay for a decent place for children to play - safe place to cross 56 Hwy [I know there is a crosswalk, but I've only seen a handful of people that stop for kids in the crosswalk], and a other community enhancing features.

I am one of the most frugal people around - BUT, I am also one of the first to help a friend in need, and I think this is an economic way to spread the cost around a little more fairly.

I'm sorry I am not an eloquent writer as quite a number of people that post on Speak out are, but I think this is a good thing for Baldwin. I just hope more people will realize it isn't that big of a price tag. I for one didn't understand the cost until Tony brought it up in a recent post. Thanks Tony!

Sales tax a topic for city council

I'm sure I'll get hammered by this rough writing crowd, but I actually think a small sales tax increase is a good idea. It seems to be spread evenly among consumers - and it apparently is have a positive impact on the city. That's a GOOD thing people!

As far as no sales tax weekend goes in Missouri - I say "go for it". I won't. I would imagine you'd spend more in gas and time driving over there than you would save. I'd rather spend my time & hard-earned money elsewhere.

April 7, 2009 Election

OK. Point well taken. I'm wondering though, how much real impact all this discussing and speculating will have on the outcome of the election.

Will these few comments and opinions in any way sway a big number of voters?

April 7, 2009 Election

I know that it's more fun to speculate and make things more dramatic and interesting ... but, maybe - just maybe you should wait until the election is over, the ballots have been counted to see if an additional council seat is going to open up.

Just an outside observers opinion.

April 7, 2009 Election

My thoughts exactly. This George bashing goes way beyond any normal support for a different candidate.

Frankly, I'm tired of it.

Ball field equipment arrives

Thanks to all who were involved. This will be a great addition/asset to Baldwin City. One, that has been greatly needed for many years! I'm excited to see the new fields put to good use!

Thanks again! Yay!

City will change policy on utility nonpayment

I think the level payment plan consists of the electric company figuring what your payment would be every month on average. So, every month you might pay $150 ... even though in July you might use $300 worth of power, but in March you might only use $75. Whatever it evens out to be. These figures are completely random, but just thought it might get the idea across.

I actually live north of Baldwin and have KCPL, and I pay $143/month. I really like it because I know how much my bill will be ... no surprises. I am also all electric, so they give me a lower rate.

Anyway, that's all I know about that.
