- For the first time since 2005, the Baldwin High Bulldogs have won their opening game of the football season. Led by senior Sam Beecher, the Bulldogs beat the Panthers here Friday night, 21-7.

- It took no time for the Baldwin High School boys’ cross country team to legitimize its No. 2 ranking in the Class 4A preseason poll. Well, actually, it took around 19 minutes here Thursday afternoon.

- Like most teenage girls, Kaylin McCrary will always remember her 16th birthday. However, there were no balloons, expensive dresses, television shows or even cake. Instead she spent her birthday with underprivileged children and a few special birthday cards.

- Scott Crenshaw was welcomed to the Baldwin School District with a certificate, balloon and $750. Baldwin Junior High School’s new seventh grade science teacher will now have extra money to help maintain the dozen animals living in his classroom.
- Despite losses, volleyball squad remains optimistic

- Although the Baldwin High School volleyball team didn’t win a match here on its opening night, it did manage to take every match to three games. The Bulldogs faced Eudora, Basehor-Linwood and Bonner Springs at the quad Tuesday night. They went 0-3 to begin the season, which was frustrating for senior Olivia Catloth.

- Following up a 10-3 season that ended in the Class 4A state semifinal round is a tough task for any high school football team. Throw in to the mix that the 2007 squad was loaded with 15 seniors, six of whom signed to play on the collegiate level.

- Every autumn, high expectations and state-championship hype surround Mike Spielman’s Baldwin High School cross country teams — and this year is no exception. The BHS girls’ squad is the returning Class 4A state champs and the boys are the returning runners-up.
- BHS soccer team bounces Chieftains

- Matt McCune’s debut as Baldwin High School soccer coach exceeded his own expectations. After nine days of practice, his Bulldogs hosted Tonganoxie on Friday to open the season. They defeated the Chieftains 2-0 to give the first-year coach his opening victory.
- District aims to educate voters on bond issue

- With election day just two months away and a bond issue vote looming, Baldwin City’s Amy Cleavinger has stepped to lead the steering committee for the “yes” vote. Cleavinger, a school district patron and Baldwin City Council president, is heading the Vote Kids First committee.
