Original Zarco closes; new era begins

A beaming Scott Zaremba attended Monday's award ceremony at his new Zarco 66 Earth Friendly Fuels station with a hint of sadness.

The family company's original station, opened 32 years ago on U.S. Highway 59 six miles south of Lawrence, had closed for good Saturday in the name of progress.

The Kansas Department of Transportation paid $900,000 three years ago for the property at 647 E. 1250 Road, and Zaremba's business had to be out by Tuesday.

"We're closing one and we're opening another," Zaremba said. "We hope we're moving forward in the Earth Friendly fuels, and we'll start the next generation."
