Baldwin High School junior Colton Bonner celebrates his first-round victory with a fist pump Friday. Bonner won his first-ever state match by defeating Wamego’s Taylor Shaffer, who entered the tournament 35-2. Bonner finished the weekend 1-2 in the 215-pound bracket.

Trio of first-time qualifiers win state matches

SALINA — Without its top competitor, this year wasn’t Baldwin High School’s best here at the Class 4A state wrestling tournament. However, it wasn’t all lost as three first-time wrestlers won their first-ever state matches.
