Barbara Janis Nichols, 83, formerly of Baldwin City, died Thursday, December 26, 2013, at the Shea Family Care Facility, in San Diego, California. She was born May 30, 1930 in Reading, Kansas the daughter of the late Charles R. (Toolie) and Naoma Gardner Whitley. She married Warren Edward Nichols in July 1963, who preceded her in death on July 22, 1985. After graduating from Baldwin high school (1947), Janis attended Baker University, was a member of the Phi Mu Sorority and graduated with an Elementary Education degree in May 1963. She taught 5th grade at Wakarusa Grade School for a number of years. Once she and Warren were blessed with the gift of their son Kirk Jerome Nichols, Janis stayed home to raise him and substitute taught in the Baldwin school district. She returned to Baker University to work in the business office in 1978 and retired in 1991. She moved to California to live with her son in December 1999 and resided there until her death. She is survived by one son, Kirk, of San Diego; a niece Stephanie Thomas and three great nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and sister Carmen Hobson. Memorials may be made to the Disabled American Veterans. Janis wished to be cremated and her ashes will be brought back to Kansas to be buried at the Vinland Cemetery next to her Husband Warren at a later time
