Joy Larita (Schilling) Wellman, 70, loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and loving friend to many died peacefully surrounded by loved ones on October 16th, 2013.
Joy was born on July 22nd, 1943 in Onaga, Kansas. She went to Mayetta High School and graduated in the class of 1961. Joy then went on to Kansas State University where she met her lifelong partner, Richard Wellman, and were married at Blue Valley Methodist Church in Manhattan, Kansas on June 2nd, 1963. This marriage produced 3 children, all boys: Mark, Jeffrey, and Bruce. Joy and Richard resided in Camanche, Iowa for many years (1963 - 1981). Joy completed her Business Administration degree at Mount Saint Clare (Clinton, Iowa) in 1980. Joy then lived in 2 other locations at Kennett Square, PA (1981 - 1991) and Seaford, DE (1991 - 1998) as they followed Richard’s career at DuPont. Joy and Richard retired to Baldwin City, KS in the fall of 1998 to be back in Kansas, the state that they both were born and deeply fond of.
Joy had many loves in her life. She loved to be active in her children’s activities when they were growing up (Parent Teachers Organization, Sports, Music, Church, etc.). In retirement, she loved sewing, quilting, and spending time with the historical society, church groups, her grandchildren, and her family and friends. Joy was more than just her name. Joy is how she is remembered as a loving and joyful person.
Joy is preceded in death by her father, Peter Henry Schilling and mother, Lucille Arvella (Strosnider) Schilling, and her brother Karl Schilling.
Joy is survived by her husband, Richard Wellman, 3 sons and daughter-in-laws: Mark & Sue Wellman of Geneva, Switzerland, Jeff and Sabrina Wellman of Lawrence, Kansas, and Bruce and Vivian Wellman of Olathe, Kansas, and 5 grandchildren: Matthew and Elizabeth (Jeff & Sabrina), and Luc, Leah, and Kaelyn (Bruce & Vivian). Joy is also survived by 2 sisters: Regina (Schilling) Harris of Topeka, Kansas and Grace (Schilling) Coleman of Mayetta, Kansas.
