Richard A. Schian 1937 - 2011 Baldwin City
Funeral Mass for Richard A. Schian, 74, Baldwin City, will be 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 24, at Annunciation Catholic Church, Baldwin City.
Mr. Schian died Saturday, Sept. 17, 2011, at his residence.
He was born Feb. 17, 1937, in Syracuse, N.Y., the son of James Vincent and Katherine (Rivet) Schian.
He grew up in Syracuse and Vero Beach, Fla. He eventually moved to Lawrence and later to Baldwin City.
Mr. Schian graduated from Lawrence High School and later attended Kansas University.
Among all his jobs, he was a farrier, horse trainer and a supervisor in food services for Kansas University, the latter from which he retired in 1999. After his retirement he joined his daughter, Pam, as co-owner of Signature Friesians, until his death.
Mr. Schian was a member of Annunciation Catholic Church of Baldwin City, Heart of America Friesian Horse Association and former president of the Heart of America Appaloosa Club.
On Feb. 28, 1959, he married Carolyn Smith at Danforth Chapel on the Kansas University campus in Lawrence. She survives, of the home.
Other survivors include three children, Pam Gish, Baldwin City, Stacey Schian, Tonganoxie, and Tony Schian, Lawrence; a brother, Andrew Vincent Schian; sister, Patricia Schian; and four grandchildren.
The family will meet with friends from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 23, at Lamb-Robert Funeral Home, Baldwin City. A rosary will be said prior to the gathering at 6 p.m.
