Dorothy Deel Barnthouse 1911 - 2011 Baldwin City
Memorial services for Dorothy Deel Barnthouse, 100, Baldwin City, will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 19, at Baldwin First United Methodist Church, Baldwin City. A reception will follow in church’s Fellowship Hall.
Mrs. Barnthouse died Saturday, Oct. 8, 2011, at Baldwin Heathcare and Rehabilitation Center.
She was born June 10, 1911, in Baldwin City, the daughter of Mary and Samuel Asher Deel.
She graduated from Baldwin High School in 1929 and from Baker University in 1933. She served as a city librarian from 1930 to 1933 when she was a student at Baker, and she taught school for one year before marriage. In the 1960s, Mrs. Barnthouse tutored high school students. She was head librarian from 1974 until 1983 at the Baldwin City Public Library.
Mrs. Barnthouse lived in Kansas City, Cleveland, Wichita, St. Louis, Atlanta, Weston, Conn., Chicago, Smoke Rise, N.J., and retired with her husband in Baldwin City. She moved to Aldersgate Village in Topeka, and then to Vintage Park in Baldwin. She entered Baldwin Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center in 2004.
She married Paul Phillip Barnthouse on May 29, 1936, in Baldwin City. He died Jan. 16, 1990. A son, Paul Phillip Barnthouse, died Sept. 4, 1969.
Mrs. Barnthouse was a lifelong member of PEO and served as president and officer in several chapters, and she was a lifelong member of Baldwin First United Methodist Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Dorothy Anne Baber, Lenexa, and Ethel Lynne Waymon, Silver Spring, Md.; and two grandchildren.
