Walter Lee 'Buck' Rockhold 1934 - 2011 Vinland
Services for Walter “Buck” Lee Rockhold, 77, Vinland, will be 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 3, at Bruce Funeral Home, Gardner. Private family inurnment will be at a later date at Vinland Cemetery.
Mr. Rockhold died peacefully Tuesday, Nov. 30, 2011, at his home after battling Parkinson’s disease and cancer for several years
He was born March 23, 1934, in Lawrence, the son of George Marion and Georgia Wilma (Needles) Rockhold. He graduated from Vinland High School in 1952, and served in the Kansas National Guard from 1952 to 1960.
Mr. Rockhold worked for Lawrence Paper Co. and then Hercules Powder Co. He later moved to Miami, Fla., and began working at his father-in-law’s company building swimming pools until 1957, when he began working for Florida Power and Light Co.
He returned to Kansas in June 1960. He started working for Westar Energy (Kansas Power and Light) in 1965 as a commercial meterman until his early retirement due to illness in 1992. He then drove dump trucks for his son Allen’s company, Jayhawk Excavating, until 1996 when again his health prevented him from continuing.
He was a lifetime member of Fraternal Order of Eagles #309 and a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local #304.
On Jan. 14, 1955, he married Patricia “Pat” A. Meyer in Baldwin City. She survives of the home.
Other survivors include two sons, Allen (Terri) Rockhold, and Gary Rockhold; two grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and siblings Helen Hapes, Betty Lawrenz, Leonard Rockhold, Bob Rockhold and Glenn Rockhold.
Visitation will be before the service from 10to 11:30 a.m.
The family suggests memorials to the Parkinson’s Disease Foundation or Midland Care Hospice, sent in care of the funeral home, 106 S Center, Gardner, KS 66030.
