Vivian G. Courtney 1910 - 2010 Baldwin City

A celebration of life service for Vivian G. Courtney, 100, will be at 2 p.m. March 13 at the Baldwin First United Methodist Church. Mrs. Courtney died Friday, Feb. 19, 2010, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.
She was born Feb. 18, 1910, in Ogallah, Kan., the daughter of Claude and Clarinda Reeves. She graduated from Wakeeney High School and attended Fort Hays State Teachers College.
She married Vernon Courtney Aug. 21, 1932, in Ogallah. They operated Courtney’s Department Store in Quinter until 1953.
Mrs. Courtney moved to Baldwin City in 1953 and started working in the Baker University treasurer’s office in 1954. She retired in 1978, but then became house mother at Alpha Chi Omega sorority, where she worked another six years.
Survivors include a son, Robert Courtney, and wife Marlene, Baldwin City; two daughters, Kathleen Thomas, Baldwin City, and Vernelle St. John and husband Gary, Buffalo Grove, Ill.; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Virgil Reeves, Baldwin City, and Glen Reeves, Rialto, Calif.
Memorials are suggested to the Baldwin First United Methodist Church Memorial Fund, in care of the church.
