Ethel Irene Johnston 1906 - 2010 Ottawa
Graveside services for Ethel Irene Johnston, 103, Ottawa, were April 26 at Oakwood Cemetery. Mrs. Johnston died April 23, 2010, at Ransom Memorial Hospital.
She was born Sept. 30, 1906, to Robert Fredrick and Lydia Ann (McGee) Murphy in Farmington, Mo. She graduated from Farmington High School and received an associate’s degree from Flat River Junior College.
She and her husband owned several neighborhood grocery stores in Kansas City, Mo., and Kansas City, Kan. In her early years she taught school for two years in Missouri. She moved to Baldwin City in 1945 and worked at the Farmer’s Union Grocery Store. She worked in the cafeteria at Baker University for more than 30 years. She also worked at the lunchroom at Baldwin Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center for more than 10 years before retiring at age 87.
She was a former member of Ives Chapel Methodist Church.
She married Ernest Albert Johnston. He preceded her in death.
Survivors include a son, Ernest Albert Johnston, Jr., and his wife Kathy, Baldwin City; a grandson; a sister; and a number of nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two sisters and a brother.
