Arvard Baker Watkins 1917 - 2008 Mount Vernon, Mo.

Arvard Baker Watkins, 90, died Sunday, June 22, 2008, at a Veterans Home and Hospital in Mount Vernon, Mo.
Mr. Watkins was born Oct. 27, 1917, in LaVerne, Okla., the son of J. Harve and Harriett Barker Watkins. At a young age, he moved with his family to Salina and two years later they moved to Vinland.
Mr. Watkins graduated from Vinland Grade School and attended Vinland High School for two years. He joined the U.S. Navy at age 17 and served 10 years aboard ship before and after World War II. The remainder of his career was spent with the United States Strategic Command, including time in Korea and Vietnam. He was serving in Ft. Huachucha, Ariz., when he retired in 1964.
In September of 1952 he married Fay Harrington to San Francisco. She died April 30, 1995.
He moved to Everton, Mo., in November of 2003 to be near his sisters and families. He entered a care center on March 13, 2008, at Republic, Mo., and was transferred to the Veterans Home June 6, 2008.
Survivors include two sisters, Charlene Watkins Jones, Baldwin City, and Evelyn Watkins Whetten, Springfield, Mo.; a sister-in-law, Lila M. Watkins, Baldwin City; two nephews and two nieces.
Mr. Watkins was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, James Arlis Watkins.
