Rev. James Edward Doty 1922 - 2008 Alliance, Ohio
The Rev. James Edward Doty, Ph.D., one-time president of Baker University, died Sunday, June 15, 2008, at Alliance Community Hospital, Alliance, Ohio. He was 86.
Mr. Doty was born May 8, 1922, in Lakewood, Ohio, the son of Ordello and Margaret (McCurdy) Doty.
Mr. Doty received his bachelor of arts degree from Mount Union College in 1944, his master of divinity degree cum laude from Boston University School of Theology in 1947 and his doctor of philosophy degree from Boston University graduate school in 1959. Mr. Doty also did graduate work at Harvard and Oxford universities. He was awarded a doctor of divinity degree from Mount Union College and DePauw University.
An ordained elder of the Northeast Ohio Conference of the United Methodist Church, Mr. Doty served 15 pastorates during his career in Massachusetts, Indiana, Texas and Ohio. He was the founding pastor of two churches in Indiana and served as the interim pastor of nine congregations. He retired from active ministry in 2007.
From 1957 to 1966, Mr. Doty served as the director of pastoral care and counseling of the Indiana Area of the Methodist Church. In 1966, Mr. Doty was named president of Baker University, a position he held until 1973. He held many other posts during his tenure.
He married Merciel Smith and she survives. He is also survived by three children, the Rev. Mark Allen Doty, Brewer, Ma., Dr. David Wesley Doty and his wife, Jill, of Maysville and Louisville, Ky., and Martha Suzanne Doty of Chicago. Other survivors include four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services are Friday at 2 p.m. at the Union Avenue Methodist Church in Alliance. Memorial contributions can be made to Mount Union College in Alliance or Baker University.
