Baldwin boys surprise with 3rd-place finish at state track

The Baldwin High boys won one gold medal and scored points in seven other event to earn a third-place finish at last weekend’s state 4A track meet in Wichita. “We just had a great meet,” coach Mike Spielman said. “Coming in, it was going to take a lot of work to get a trophy. They just did a great job and were able to get a third-place trophy.”

Two days after the Baldwin High girls defended their 4A state track and field championship in Wichita, coach Ted Zuzzio was still in awe of what his team accomplished. “We won six events,” he said Monday. “That’s unheard of at this level. Eight of the 12 girls we took to Wichita won gold medals. Baldwin’s quality won the championship.

When the 2014 Baldwin High track and field season started, girls coach Ted Zuzzio said it would be his “swan song” before he entered retirement. That theme continued throughout the season and included an announcement the Frontier League meet at Liston Stadium would be his last home meet as coach of the Bulldogs.

The Baldwin school board agreed Tuesday the two football fields the junior high and high school sub-varsity teams use west of the Baldwin High School are in bad shape and need to be upgraded, but did not agree to allow those teams to play games on the district’s soccer field.
Sister act: Bulldog siblings gave softball team stability on the mound

Baldwin High School’s softball relied on two pitchers from the same household this year, as the Bulldogs rotated between junior Kassadie Burton and her freshman sister, Kinley, on the mound. The two siblings led the Bulldogs to a 7-15 team record. Kinley added three wins after her older sister suffered a concussion during the second game of an April 1 doubleheader and remained on the bench for three weeks.

Baldwin and Paola battled for dominance at Thursday’s Frontier League meet at Liston Stadium with the Bulldog boys earning the title and a deeper Panther girls team claiming the throne. The Baldwin boys won eight of the meet’s 18 events and racked up 188 points to Paola’s 143. The Bulldog girls won eight events to Paola’s seven, but were outpointed by the Panthers, 201-166.
