Baldwin girls fall in overtime

The Baldwin High School girls ended a four-game road trip Friday with a 45-29 overtime loss to Ottawa. After a close first half, the visiting Bulldogs scored the first seven points of the third quarter to take a 28-20. Ottawa steadily chipped away at the lead, going up, 36-35, before Baldwin senior Hailey Cope hit one of two free throws with 2:30 remaining in regulation to knot the game.

Something familiar and something new plagued the Baldwin High School boys in a 52-40 Friday loss to the Ottawa Cyclones. The familiar was the 3-2 zone defense Ottawa successfully deployed. Baldwin has seen a steady diet of zone in recent games as teams look to nullify the Bulldogs’ athleticism.

The Baldwin High School girls suffered another heartbreaking loss Tuesday when Louisburg senior guard Kacie Geiman connected on a three-pointer with five seconds left in the game, giving the Wildcats a 62-59 victory. Louisburg trailed by 52-43 entering the fourth quarter before mounting its late rally. The Bulldogs jumped out to an early lead behind the hot shooting of senior Hailey Cope, who knocked down two of her three three-pointers in the first quarter.

The Baldwin High School boys became escape artists in the last week, managing to pick up overtime victories at De Soto and Louisburg after trailing most of both games. On Tuesday, the Bulldogs latest narrow 46-44 escape played out with a good deal of late game strategizing.

The Baldwin High School girls suffered a cold shooting second half in a 40-28 loss to the De Soto Wildcats. The Bulldogs and Wildcats traded the lead in the game throughout the first half before De Soto wrested the lead for good at 18-17 with 1:16 remaining before halftime.

Baldwin High School senior guard Cornell Brown scored 11 of his 27 points in the third overtime as the Bulldogs overcame De Soto on the road, 77-75. Brown made the last points of the game on a jump shot from the right baseline with 3.8 seconds remaining.

The Paola High School girls held off Baldwin, 45-41, to improve to 6-0 in the Frontier League. Baldwin had a 13-6 advantage at the end of the first quarter and took a 17-13 lead to the locker room at halftime. Paola found its offense in the second half and limited the Bulldogs to just four points in the third quarter.
