Baldwin girls win soccer program’s first-ever win against Piper

The Baldwin High School girls soccer team capped off a busy and successful week with a 1-0 home victory Tuesday against Piper. The victory followed a 2-0 loss to De Soto on the road and an easy 8-2 victory last Thursday on the road at Basehor-Linwood.
Baldwin High softball team starts season 2-2

The Baldwin Bulldog softball team posted a 2-2 record to start the season with a sweep of De Soto on the road followed by two losses Tuesday at home to Ottawa. The Bulldogs opened the season strong with the twin-bill killing last Thursday against a De Soto, which claimed the 4A championship two years ago.

After leaving the Baldwin USD 348 district office Monday with an application to substitute teach, Emily Brown admitted she was happy with not having a full-time job. Brown said she has thoughts about settling down, but she’s having too good a time making a living doing the two things she loves, playing volleyball and traveling. In the last six month, the 6-foot, 2-inch Brown has played professional volleyball in the Philippines and Puerto Rico.

As he timed members of the Baldwin High School boys and girls track teams running successive training sprints Monday, girls coach Ted Zuzzio made a prediction. Zuzzio didn’t predict his girls team would win its third-straight 4A championship or that the boys would be in the hunt for its second-straight state trophy and fourth-straight Frontier League championship. His prediction did, however, shed light on why those things are possible.

Six Baldwin High School basketball players earned All-Frontier League post-season recognition in a very competitive year that saw two the league’s girls teams earn state title berths in their respective classes and college coaches drooling over one sophomore forward. Baldwin senior Maddie Ogle was the Bulldogs’ lone first-team all-league selection on either the girls or boys teams. If it seems as if the Bulldogs were overlooked, consider Paola, which was undefeated until the Panthers lost in the 4A Division I championship game to Bishop Miege, also landed only one player of the first team in junior Morgan Laudan.

The No. 7 seeded Baker University women’s basketball team ended its national tournament run on Thursday afternoon in a, 52-47, loss to No. 2 Oklahoma Baptist in the First Round of the 2015 NAIA Division I Women’s Basketball National Championship Presented by the Susan G. Komen Foundation of Grater Kansas City at the Independence Events Center.

The faces crowding the rails to court side Saturday at Park City’s Hartman Arena were as familiar as Baldwin High School starting five being introduced for the girls 4A Division II state championship game. The high school fans decked out in old school basketball jerseys included regulars who had cheered on the team nearly every time it took the floor. The group included a core of seniors Eric Peterson, Joe Pierce, Brock Randels and twins Christian and Collin Linder.

PARK CITY — Hugoton’s quickness proved to be the difference Saturday in the 4A Division II state championship game. Hugoton sophomore guard Amy Scott had 25 points and freshman point guard Dallie Hoskinson added 22 points, going 5-for-9 from the field and 11-for-12 from the line, as the Eagles downed Baldwin, 68-54, in the game played in Park City’s Hartman Arena.

Park City — Baldwin High School senior Maddie Ogle scored 20 points, including seven in the first quarter, as the Bulldogs bulled their way into the 4A Division II state title game with a 67-42 against Concordia. Ogle, who scored 18 points in Baldwin’s first-round 61-44 win against Girard, said she found playing in Park City’s Hartman Arena to her liking.
