Baldwin sweeps Wellsville in baseball twin bill

The Baldwin Bulldogs swept on Thursday a home doubleheader against Wellsville with a 4-1 win in the opener and recording a six inning 10-0 run-rule victory in the nightcap. The sweep improved Baldwin’s season record to 4-2 and came two days after the Bulldogs dropped a twin bill at Ottawa.

Wellsville — The Baldwin High School softball team had a tough day at the plate and in the field Thursday in losing both games of a doubleheader to Wellsville. The Bulldogs lost the first game, 3-2, in eight innings and fell in the nightcap 8-3.

The Baldwin High School softball team got an outstanding performance Tuesday from freshman pitcher Kinley Burton in a double-header sweep of Ottawa. The Bulldogs won the first game, 5-3, and the nightcap, 10-2, with Burton going the distance in both games.

The Baldwin High School boys were first and girls second in their first competition of the 2014 season. The teams opened the year at Liston Stadium on an afternoon temperatures topped out at 50 degrees in the 12-team Baldwin Invitational.

In his “last hurrah” as Baldwin High School girls track coach, Ted Zuzzio acknowledges his team will be a contender to defend its 4A state title by winning its fourth championship in five years. “A lot of medals walked out the door last year,” said Zuzzio, who is retiring at the end of the school year. “But we have a lot coming back.”
