At each level of competition throughout his wrestling career, Bryce Shoemaker hasn’t needed long to rise to the top. Shoemaker, a Baker University freshman, proved that once again by winning the 133-pound weight class at the NAIA Championships on March 8 at the Kansas Expocentre in Topeka.

Collins is not only the home for Baker’s winter sports of men’s and women’s basketball and wrestling, but the school’s baseball, softball, soccer and track teams use the facility for their preseason or off-season conditioning, Harris said.

The No. 1 seeded Baker University women’s basketball team defeated No. 5 Missouri Valley, 69-60, on Saturday night to advance to the 2014 HAAC Women’s Basketball championship game and will now take on No. 2 MidAmerica Nazarene. The MNU Pioneers defeated No. 3 Central Methodist, 77-54, on Saturday in the HAAC semis and will prepare for its third game against BU this season on Tuesday, Mar. 11 at 7 p.m. inside the Collins Center.

Topeka-Hayden came back from five points down with 50 seconds remaining to defeat Baldwin, 42-41, and earn a trip to the Division I 4A state tournament. Hayden junior Brogan Heinen gave his team the lead when he connected on a NBA range three-pointer with 17.1 seconds remaining.

Baker University freshman and Baldwin City, Kan., native 133-pound wrestler Bryce Shoemaker became the first-ever NAIA Wrestling National Champion in the school’s history at Saturday’s 2014 NAIA Wrestling National Championship inside the Kansas Expocentre.
Baldwin to play Hayden for state tournament berth

The Baldwin Bulldog boys overcame a frigid third quarter to defeat Wamego, 45-36, and advance the title game of the sub-state tournament. Baldwin will play Topeka-Hayden Saturday for a berth in the Division I 4A state tournament at Baldwin. Hayden defeated defending 4A state champion Ottawa, 58-53, in the night’s second game.
