- Opening night of ups, downs for BHS volleyball squad

- Once the initial cobwebs were shaken off Tuesday evening, the Baldwin High School volleyball squad won its first match of the season. Unfortunately, it took a quick defeat and a close loss in the next set to shake off those opening-night cobwebs.

- Mike Berg is bringing back the ‘good ole days’ of Baldwin High School football this fall … well, sort of. The BHS football coach is returning his offense to the scheme it used in 2007 and 2008. During those years, the Bulldogs had a combined record of 18-6.
- BHS cross country teams aiming for state titles

- If the Baldwin High School cross country teams can stay healthy this fall, it might mean trouble for the other Class 4A teams. It also could mean coach Mike Spielman would be adding hardware to his already extensive collection of state trophies. Since he started at BHS in 1992, his cross country teams have won 17 state championships.
- High expectations surround Bulldogs’ season

- Justin Hoffman has high expectations for his Baldwin High School girls’ tennis squad this fall and with good reason, too. His Bulldogs return all six varsity players from last year’s team and several junior varsity players that nearly made the varsity team a year ago.

- Ottawa University made a statement with the opening play of Saturday’s Victory Sports First Down Classic. The Cyclones ran the opening kickoff back 99 yards for a touchdown. Clarence Anderson scored the TD after taking a handoff from Shane Gimzo on the 5-yard line.

- 9:01 - Baker couldn’t convert a fourth-down attempt with 1:03 left in the game. Ottawa took over near midfield. The Braves defeat the Wildcats 24-14 in the season-opening contest. The two teams last played in 1993, but tonight Ottawa ends up on top of Baker for the win.

- Mike Grossner is anxious but nervous for Saturday’s season-opening football game at Ottawa University. The seventh-year head coach of the Baker University football team has several concerns about his No. 24-ranked Wildcats facing No. 9 Ottawa.

- While this year’s Baldwin High School soccer team will look quite similar to the 2009 squad, there will be a difference in philosophy from the head coach. A year ago, former coach Matt McCune stressed defense first. His Bulldogs tried to protect their goal and tried to find scoring opportunities when available.
- BHS volleyball squad ready to improve from last fall

- Changing the mentality and producing wins has been a theme of the Baldwin High School volleyball team for several years in a row, but this year’s seniors are bound and determined to make it happen. During the past three seasons, the Bulldogs have won 15 matches. Their six wins a year ago were an improvement from the previous two years, but nowhere near what the players and coaches wanted to achieve.

- For the second straight year, weather was all the talk Monday for the opening Baldwin High School sports’ practices. A year ago, the BHS cross country and football teams were forced to open their season with indoor practices. Lightning and thunderstorms rolled through the Baldwin City area during the morning of the inaugural practice day.

- Mike Grossner is dealing with lack of practice time before his season opener for the second straight season. A year ago, the Baker University football coach wasn’t able to hold two-a-day practices because the start of the fall semester was too close to the first day of practice. This year that problem is gone, but he’s faced with another adversary.
- Smaller Frontier League changes schedules

- For the third time in six years, the Frontier League has changed its size. A once large, 13-team organization has dwindled down to seven schools. In 2004, the league expanded from 10 to 13 teams with the additions of Ottawa, De Soto and Central Heights. In 2007, it shrank to eight teams as Central Heights, Anderson County, Osawatomie, Prairie View and Wellsville left to form the Pioneer League. Then Gardner-Edgerton announced its decision to leave the league in 2009.

- Monday morning will begin the annual rite of passage for all high school and junior high school athletics in the state. When it comes to excitement surrounding the first day of fall practice, this year is no different. Students and coaches from Baldwin High School and Baldwin Junior High School are anxious for Monday.
