Justin Vander Tuig and Zach Wright led the Baldwin High School boys’ basketball team to its second straight win Tuesday night. The pair of BHS post players combined for 38 points and 33 rebounds as the Bulldogs (6-7) took down Northern Heights 50-41 at home.

A home tournament might have been just the answer for the Baldwin High School wrestling team, who may have had its worst meet Jan. 23 at Holton. After the tournament in Holton, BHS coach Kit Harris said his squad didn’t improve from the previous week. That was the first time all season he could remember that happening. One week later, the Bulldogs hosted the Baldwin Invitational Tournament and results were better.
BJHS eighth grade boys improve to 9-0

WELLSVILLE — For the first time in three years, the Baldwin High girls’ basketball team has advanced to the Top Gun Tournament championship game. Baldwin beat Kansas City Christian 57-42 here Thursday night.

WELLSVILLE — Winning here has become almost a routine for the Baldwin High School girls’ basketball team, at least as far as the first round of the Top Gun Tournament is concerned. Every year Wellsville High has hosted the Top Gun, which is in its 20th season, the Bulldogs have won their opening game.

Although eight members of the Baldwin High School wrestling team placed in the top six Saturday, coach Kit Harris thought his squad took a step back this weekend. Baldwin went 25-24 overall in matches and scored 139 total team points. That was good enough for a sixth-place finish at the Gerald Sadowski Invitational at Holton High School.

Since Eric Toot took over the Baldwin High School boys’ basketball team in 2006, the Bulldogs have played in the championship contest of their home tournament every season. The Bulldogs entered this year’s Baldwin Invitational Tournament as the No. 4 seed. After back-to-back wins, they found themselves in their fourth straight BIT title game against another underdog, No. 6-seeded Bonner Springs.

It took an overtime victory over Wheatridge for the Baldwin Junior High School eighth grade varsity boys’ basketball team to remain unbeaten. BJHS won 49-45 at home Tuesday.

WELLSVILLE — For three quarters, free throws weren’t falling for either Baldwin High or Bonner Springs girls’ basketball teams here Tuesday. However, one team made its foul shots during the final quarter of the first round Top Gun Tournament.
