Catching up on a usual busy, busy June
Around Town column
July 1, 2010
Turning the calendar over today to July 1 officially brings the end of yet another extremely busy June in and around Baldwin City. It also hit me that I haven’t done a bits-and-pieces column in a long time and I certainly have them. So here it is.
Rumors of the Big 12’s death were greatly exaggerated
Around Town column
June 17, 2010
That collective sigh of relief heard this week in the area was from Big 12 fans who could finally breathe after a week plus of listening to what looked like the blow-by-blow destruction of their beloved conference.
A bitter mowing tale … or?
A
May 6, 2010
I think it’s safe to say spring is here. I think it is, anyway. I’ve looked at a lot of forecasts and don’t see much chance for snow. But what do the weather liars, er, weather forecasters know?
It’s been an adventuresome April
Around Town column
April 22, 2010
I’ve been having an adventuresome April. Some adventures have been good, while others have not. The unpleasant adventure started April 2 when we had a storm-related power outage at work. After the 20 or so minutes in the dark, power returned. It’s not like this hasn’t happened before.
Winter just won’t let go
Around Town column
March 25, 2010
So, you thought the Winter Olympics were over weeks ago, didn’t you? Nope, there was another round of games yet to play when Mother Nature dumped another round of snow and ice on us. Nice.

Around Town column

If you haven’t heard by now, yes, longtime Signal columnist June Jewett fell and broke her hip last Wednesday. She was moved to the Good Samaritan rehab facility Monday after spending several days in Olathe Medical Center for surgery on the hip.
Column: All about doing more even when you have less
May 7, 2009
By now, we’re all used to the mantra of “do more with less” during these tough economic times. It’s a fact of life. We’ve seen all too well here in Baldwin City the same problems that are occurring nationwide — layoffs, bankruptcies and foreclosures. We’re not immune.
Column: Signal celebrates 10th birthday
March 5, 2009
Join with us this morning in singing happy birthday to the Baldwin City Signal. The Signal is 10 years old today. The first issue was printed on March 3, 1999. That was after four months as a special section of the Lawrence Journal-World called the “Baldwin Report.”
New look for Signal offers new features
February 5, 2009
Welcome to the new and improved Baldwin City Signal. We hope you like it. We do. As you’ve already seen and will continue to as you flip through the tall tab’s inaugural 24-page issue, there are a host of new features, as well as old standbys. While it’s new, it still contains what you’ve come to expect from the Signal over the last 10 years.
Fanatical fans, that’s for sure
Around Town Column
December 24, 2008
Yes, I was one of those 40,000 or so idiots in the Arrowhead icebox Sunday. So were my sons. The acorn truly doesn’t fall far from the tree. They were born and raised Kansas City fans, both the Chiefs and the Royals. Now in their mid-20s, they hold true to those teams despite their lack of recent success.
Column: Life isn’t easy on the Kitten Ranch
December 18, 2008
With single-digit temperatures and wind chills worse than that, it’s time for an update on the Kitten Ranch. The herd is cold. As you may recall, I quite by accident got into the Kitten Ranching business about two years ago when I moved to the Temple Place just a spit and a holler from Vinland.
