Council renames park to reflect Baldwin City history

One of Baldwin City’s most popular parks was given a new name for the second time in a month. On Monday, the Baldwin City Council approved renaming the park at 11th and High streets from West Park to Women’s Bridge Park.
Baldwin City purchasing right to provide electrical service to industrial park

Popular downtown venue newest Baldwin City park

A popular downtown gathering place is now officially a city park. Baldwin City Administrator Chris Lowe said the city purchased the empty lot west of the Baldwin City Post Office in the 700 block of High Street from Baldwin State Bank for $75,000.
Baldwin City has sister city in South Africa

After two years of effort, Baldwin City is now the sister city of a similar-sized town in South Africa. On Feb. 16, the Baldwin City Council approved a memorandum of understanding establishing a sister city relationship with Riviersonderend, Western Cape, South Africa, a community of about 5,000 people.
Baldwin board, council oppose proposed changes to local elections

The Baldwin school board and Baldwin City Council have added their voices to the list of municipalities and school boards publicly opposing proposed changes to local elections. Bills were introduced in the Kansas House and Senate this session that would move the date of city and school board elections, which are now held in April of odd-numbered years.

The leaders behind a proposal to expand the Douglas County Jail and construct a mental health crisis intervention center know there’s a need for such an undertaking and that it must be acted on soon. But for now, they just want to understand it.
Baldwin City curb-side recycling option more popular with recent changes

The local curb-side recycling option saw an uptick in new starts last month on news that it would be the only game around. Brad Smith, financial director for Baldwin City, said 19 new customers signed up in January for the curb-side recycle option offered through the city’s waste contract with Ottawa Sanitation.
CR 1055 among Douglas County’s coming 2015 capital projects

East 1700 Road improvements About a three-mile stretch of East 1700 Road, between North 400 Road and North 700 Road north of Baldwin City, will be “busy all year,” according to Keith Browning, the public works director. Culverts and pavement will be replaced, shoulders constructed, trees removed and a bridge replaced to improve road safety. Timeline: Construction will last from March through the end of October. That stretch will be closed off for much of that time, Browning said. Price tag: A total of $2.38 million, with more work coming for E 1700 Road in 2016 and 2017.
City Council supports plan to convert old Chapel Street school into apartments

The Baldwin City Council voted unanimously Monday to support a plan to redevelop the former junior high school on Chapel Street into 30 apartments. Flint Hills Holdings Group LLC asked the city to support the plan as it prepares application for historical preservation tax credits from the Kansas Housing Resources Corporation.

Baldwin City residents may not know the community’s first-ever Chamber of Commerce executive director, but they’ve probably heard his voice. “That’s what I’ve been telling people,” Booth said Friday. “I’ve done the radio show “According to the Record” since getting out of the Army in 1972.”

After a flurry of late filings, there will be seven candidates on this spring’s ballot vying for three seats on the Baldwin City Council. No primary will be needed to cull the field of Steve Bauer, Tony Brown, April Coburn, Bonnie Plumberg, Dave Simmons, Casey Simoneau and incumbent Shane Starkey.
