Community Wellness Festival returning April 12 to Baldwin City

The 13th annual Community Wellness Festival, sponsored by the Baldwin City Recreation Commission and Baker University, is scheduled for 9 a.m. to noon, Saturday, April 12, at the Collins Center on the Baldwin City campus.

As the longtime former Baker University athletic director, Dan Harris knows how busy the Collins Center is. Collins is not only the home for Baker’s winter sports of men’s and women’s basketball and wrestling, but the school’s baseball, softball, soccer and track teams use the facility for their preseason or off-season conditioning, Harris said.

Ira DeSpain, the minister to Baker University since 1992, will deliver his “Last Lecture” at 9 p.m., Wednesday, March 26, at Rice Auditorium. The event is part of a series hosted by Baker’s Student Activities Council. The public is welcome to attend.

Katelin Colby, a Baker University senior from Paola, placed third in creative nonfiction essays at Sigma Tau Delta International 2014 on Feb. 26-March 1 in Savannah, Ga. More than 1,000 students and faculty attended the English honors society event featuring the best student writers in the country.

Baker University’s daylong Concert Honor Band Festival will conclude at 7 p.m. tonight with a free concert at Rice Auditorium. More than 100 musicians from area high school, including Baldwin, Ottawa and Wellsville high schools, will perform.

Theresa Yetmar, Baker University’s director of athletics, announced Monday that longtime baseball coach and Class of 2012 Baker Hall of Fame member Phil Hannon will resign his coaching position at the end of the 2014 season to accept a post as the university’s assistant director of development. “Phil has been an integral member of our department for 14 years,” Yetmar said. “He brings a voracious energy and positive attitude to work every day. He inspires trust amongst our staff and coaches. We could not be more pleased that Phil will now be playing an active role in fundraising for our institution.”

The Arbor Day Foundation has recognized Baker University as a 2013 Tree Campus USA for its commitment to promoting healthy trees and engaging students and staff in the spirit of conservation. Baker has been honored four consecutive years by the foundation.
Baker names new minister for Baldwin City campus

The Rev. Kevin Hopkins has been named minister to the university at Baker University, Brian Posler, executive vice president for academic affairs, announced Thursday. Hopkins, the senior pastor at Leavenworth First United Methodist Church since 2009, will succeed the Rev. Ira DeSpain, who announced last year his plans to retire after the 2013-2014 academic year.
