Baldwin school district sees dip in enrollment

In a normal year, Monday would have been an important date in the Baldwin school district’s fiscal year. The state has long set aside the date of Sept. 21 as the official date public school districts report their enrollment numbers for school funding purposes. However, this year school districts are being funded through block grants frozen at the level of state funding they received a year ago.
Brownback intervenes in auction of illegal deer heads

A 14-point whitetail deer head was removed from a state auction of illegally hunted trophy deer heads at the request of Gov. Sam Brownback’s office because of a continuing dispute over its ownership.
Baldwin school board set special meeting to discuss update of strategic plan

While making quick work of its short agenda Monday, the Baldwin school board started the ball rolling on what promises to keep members busy in the months ahead. The board scheduled a work session to discuss an update of the district’s strategic plan for 7 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 3. The strategic plan was last updated three years ago.
Baldwin City Council names Smith interim city administrator

On Monday, the Baldwin City Council approved the appointment of Brad Smith to the position as interim city administrator as the council looks for a replacement of the departed Chris Lowe.

Friend wants Lumberyard show to reflect Baldwin City artist’s complexity

Walt Bailey was concluding a two-month labor of respect and love Monday as he started hanging the works of late friend and colleague Tom Russell for a show at the Lumberyard Arts Center. The show of paintings, drawings and lithographs Russell produced during his more than 80-year artistic career will fill the art center’s gallery and overflow into its courtyard.
