United Way of Douglas County shifts goals for 2015 campaign

United Way of Douglas County is taking a fresh approach this year for its annual fall campaign. Colleen Gregoire, United Way of Douglas County vice president and campaign manager, said instead of shooting for a particular dollar goal, the goal of the 2015 campaign, which kicked off Sept. 2, was to increase donors and volunteerism. Locally, the goal is to increase the number of Baldwin City’s donors by 25 percent from 136 contributors to 170.

His boss says Baldwin City choose a good time to hire the city’s first assistant public works director. It was announced at the Sept. 8 Baldwin City Council meeting that Dave Flipse was hired to the newly created position. City public works director Bill Winegar said the hire came at a welcome time.

Those responsible for two road projects involving entrances to Baldwin City are confident work on the improvements will be completed in time for the Maple Leaf Festival. Commuters who have been using Douglas County Road 1055 to drive to Vinland and Lawrence despite the route’s summerlong closure at CR North 500 Road found the road closed Monday morning at Baldwin City north city limits.
