OTTAWA — Ottawa junior Cooper Diel ran for three second-half touchdowns Friday as the Cyclones overcame a 3-0 halftime deficit to defeat Baldwin, 19-3.
The win improved Ottawa to 1-1 in district play and 5-3 overall. Baldwin fell to 0-2 in district play and 2-6 for the season.
Baldwin had the better of a defensive first half as the Cyclones failed to record a first down. Baldwin had trouble moving the ball as well. It’s best drive of the half and the game came in the second quarter when Baldwin drove from its own 22-yard line into the Ottawa redzone on 16 plays. The drive stalled after the Bulldogs earned a first-and-goal at the 10-yard line, and Baldwin settled for a 19-yard Blake Adamson field goal.
Ottawa finally solved the Bulldog defense on its second drive of the third quarter. Diel finished the four-play, 63-yard drive with a 22-yard touchdown dash, which gave the Cyclones a 6-3 advantage. After holding the Bulldogs to a three-and-out, Ottawa mounted a 17-play, 69-yard drive, which ended when Diel bust into the end zone from a yard out. The drive, which gave the Cyclones a 13-3 lead, consumed the last 3:40 of the third period and nearly the first seven minutes of the final quarter.
