Baldwin Bulldog soccer team draws Ottawa in playoffs
The Bulldog soccer team closed out its regular season with two losses in the last week.
The second loss Monday was tough 2-0 defeat on the road to undefeated Frontier League champion De Soto.
Last Thursday, the Bulldog’s lost 3-1 to Ottawa, a team they defeated 4-0 on the road in September. The two teams will match up in the 1A to 4A state playoffs to decide the season series.
A strong wind greatly influenced last Thursday’s match with the Baldwin enjoying its benefits in the first half before Ottawa had the breeze edge in the second half.
Baldwin took advantage of the wind to grab a 1-0 lead at halftime after junior Noah Buckley scored from in front of the goal with 18:50 left the first half.
Ottawa knotted the score early in the second half and went on to score twice more while applying near constant pressure on the Baldwin side of the field.
“We lost our composure,” Ising said after the match. “I’m sorry we didn’t play better for our fans.”
It was senior night for the team’s five seniors, Austin Jamison, Logan Phillips, Brendan Owings, Austin Ward and Austin Langham. They may have another opportunity to play on their home field.
Ottawa will conclude its regular season with a match today against Louisburg. Should the Cyclones lose, Baldwin will be the host of the playoff match. The home field will be decided with a coin flip should Ottawa win.
The match will probably be played Tuesday, Ising said, but that the date has not been set.
