The Baldwin High School soccer team battled its way to a winning record with two victories in the last week.
The 5-2 home victory against last Thursday against Eudora avenged an early 2-0 loss to the Bulldogs’ rival. Baldwin coach Andrew Ising said that was a sign of the team’s progress in recent weeks.
“We started the season 1-5, and now we are 5-1-1 in our last seven games, so something is different,” he said after the Eudora win. “I think this is closer to who we are than how we started, but we also started against four of the top team in the state.
“We took advantage of some mistakes today, which we didn’t do earlier in the season. We punished mistakes and limited our own.”
The team continued its success in a road contest at Louisburg on Monday, winning 2-0. Noah Buckley scored both goals for the Bulldogs. The team is now 7-6-1 on the year.
The Bulldogs trailed early in the Eudora match before catching the Cardinals at halftime. The team broke it open in the second half. Baldwin was so dominate in possession, it took four corner kicks in a about three-minute span, with Caleb Othick scoring on the final one.
Othick also had the team’s first goal in the contest. Buckley also scored twice, and senior Brendan Owings got a goal.
“Caleb has been so close to a goal all year” Ising said. “He’s been playing some great crosses and had some beautiful assists, but he hasn’t been able to score — it’s gone over, it hit the crossbar or a post, it’s been deflected or was saved. It’s nice to see him get a few in the net.”
Senior Austin Ward was in agreement with his coach about the team’s improvement, attributing the improvement to the Bulldogs’ better offense.
“Getting goals in helps us get more confident and helps the whole team concentrate better,” he said. “It gets us hyped and the team overall is more into it.”
The Bulldogs will wrap up its regular season schedule with a senior day contest at 4 p.m. today against Ottawa.
