Baker women start hoops season 3-0
The No. 23 ranked Baker University women’s basketball team scored 85 points for the second-straight game with its 85-31 win over Grace University (Neb.), on Saturday.
With the win, Baker moved to 2-0, as they defeated Midland in overtime on Friday night, 85-77.
The Wildcats knocked down 10 three-point field goals on the day with four coming from Jessica Zweifel on her 4-of-8 shooting.
She tied for the team lead in scoring with Macy Wallisch with 14 points. Wallisch went 6-of-17 shooting and finished with two blocks. Courtney Hoag again led the team in blocks with three.
Baker began the day with a 25-5 lead after the first quarter, then outscored the Royals, 24-10, in the second quarter and an impressive 17-4 in the third.
The Wildcats also dominated on the boards, outrebounding Grace, 50-30, with nine coming from Taylor Chase and eight from Wallisch.
Caitlin Modesett nearly scored in double figures for the second straight game, as she finished with nine points and Jami Hodge had a team-high four steals and seven points.
The Baker defense held the Royals to just 23.8-percent shooting overall on 10-of-42 and allowed just two offensive rebounds.
The Baker University women’s basketball team opened its 2015-16 season with an overtime victory, 85-77, over Midland University on Friday night.
The game saw many runs from both sides, Baker led early, 20-8, then Midland came on late in the second quarter and ended the half on a 25-12 run to go up, 33-32, at the break.
After scoring just eight points in the third quarter and trailing 50-40 at the end of the period, Baker stormed back on a 9-0 run to trail just 50-49 early in the fourth quarter.
In overtime, Baker outscored the Warriors, 17-9. Four Wildcats scored in double figures, including a team-high 22 points from sophomore Modesett. She was 50-percent from three-point range on 4-of-8 shooting.
Ericka Simpson scored 20 points, while Hodge added 15 and Kelsey Larson scored 13.
Midland outrebounded Baker, 37-28, and Hoag led Baker with six rebounds and five blocks in her first game in a Baker uniform.
Baker will next compete in the Ottawa Classic on Friday, Nov. 13 and Saturday, Nov. 14. They will face Ottawa on Nov. 13 at 3 p.m. and the University of St. Mary on Nov. 14 at 1 p.m.
