Paola fans cheered when after 10 events of Friday’s Frontier League track and field championships at Spring Hill, the public address announcer gave the standings as Baldwin High School 106 and Paola 105.5.
The Baldwin girls gave Panther fans little to cheer about from that point on, pulling away to win the two-horse race for the championship, 198 to 173.5. De Soto was third with 77 points.
Meanwhile, the Baldwin boys were on cruise, too. They won the school’s fifth-straight league championship with 145 points to Paola’s 108.
Although the girls dominance became obvious late, it started with the throw events and an outstanding performance from senior Jordan Hoffman. She established a personal record in the javelin with a first-place throw of 140.07 feet, which was the second best in school history only to junior Kelsey Kehl’s gold-medal winning effort at the state championships last spring. Finishing second in the event was junior Kylee Bremer and Kehl was third.
Hoffman added to her spectacular day with a personal best effort in the shot put, where her throw of 40-07.5 was second to teammate Alexia Stein’s 43-05 toss. The throw, her first-ever of more than 40 feet, topped that of two Paola athletes who had bested her at the Wellsville meet a week before.
Stein double up on gold in the discus, winning with a throw of 147-05. Kehl was second and Hoffman was fourth.
It was a disappointing day for Christian Gaylord, the boys favorite in the shot. He fouled on two attempts and saw his third effort slip off his hand, boys coach Mike Speilman said. It was worrisome because the Bulldogs didn’t score in an event they looked to collect 10 points for a first-place finish. Gaylord did bounce back to take second in the discus with a throw of 162-05.
The boys prevailed with solid showing in track events and two second-place finishes in the javelin — Owen Tuckfield in the javelin and Joel Katzer in the pole vault. The boys won the 4x800 and 4x400 meter relays. Junior Dakota Helm was first and senior Joe Pierce third in the 800 meters, and junior George Letner was second in the 1,600 and third in the 3,200 meters. They all ran legs in the winning 4x800 meter relay team. Noah Watson was second in the 100 meters and third at 200 meters. He also was a member of the winning 4x400 meter relay team.
The girls won all three relay events. Madeline Neufeld was first in the 800 meters, Abbie Dick in the 1,600 and Maddie Ogle in the 100-meter hurdles.
The Baldwin teams will next compete in the 16-team regionals Friday at Kansas City Piper with the goal of winning and qualifying as many athletes as possible for the state finals the next weekend in Wichita.
