Baldwin girls move on to sub-state title game
The Baldwin High School girls took the first step of what they hope will be a deep trip in post-season play with a 69-11 victory Friday in the first round of the 4A Division II tournament in Perry.
Baldwin entered the sub-state as the No. 1 seed, having amassed a 17-3 record against a schedule of mostly 4A Division I teams. The Bulldogs jumped on winless Osawatomie from the start, building a 16-6 lead after the first quarter.
That proved to be the most competitive quarter of the game as the Bulldogs’ defense held Osawatomie without a point throughout the second quarter and more than six minutes into the third quarter, which ended with Baldwin leading 59-11. Baldwin scored easily and often as the Bulldogs’ press set up numerous layups off steals and often prevented the Trojans from advancing the ball past half court on multiple possession.
“We did what we had to do and got ourselves into the next round,” Baldwin coach Bob Martin said of the one-sided victory.
Baldwin will play for the sub-state championship at 6 p.m. today agains the winner of the Perry-Lecompton (4-16) vs. KC Bishop Ward (5-15) game.
