New Lawrence Journal World managing editor has Baldwin City ties
Veteran Lawrence Journal-World reporter and columnist Chad Lawhorn has been named managing editor of the newspaper.
As managing editor, Lawhorn will oversee the Journal-World’s staff of editors, reporters and photographers as well as the news staffs for The World Company’s weekly newspapers in Baldwin City, Tonganoxie, Bonner Springs and Shawnee.
“Chad has proven throughout his career at the Journal-World that he is a first-rate journalist who understands Lawrence and Douglas County as well as anyone,” said Dolph Simons III, president of the Newspapers Division for The World Company. “He is uniquely positioned to lead our newsroom and we are very excited that he is ready to take on that role.”
Lawhorn is a 14-year veteran of the Journal-World. He is the author of a weekly column, Lawhorn’s Lawrence, and the popular Town Talk column on LJWorld.com. He also covers city government and business for the newspaper.
Lawhorn has won numerous awards for his reporting and writing. Most recently, Lawhorn received the 2015 Burton W. Marvin Kansas News Enterprise Award, given annually by the Kansas University journalism school, for his coverage of the financing of Rock Chalk Park. In April, Lawhorn won the state’s top honor for column writing at the Kansas Press Association awards.
“Chad is a great old-school journalist. He knows how to listen to people, how to ask questions, and I love his voice in his writing,” said Dan Simons, president of the Digital Division for The World Company. “I am excited to see his leadership skills and talent affect this organization. I know it will be positive for the community and for journalism.”
While taking on new duties as managing editor, Lawhorn said he plans to continue to write for the Journal-World, including maintaining his Town Talk column.
“I’m excited to get a new opportunity in a place that I love as much as Lawrence and Douglas County,” Lawhorn said. “This is a great place to tell stories. All of us here are going to work very hard to find the most interesting and important stories to tell each day.”
Prior to coming to the Journal-World, Lawhorn was editor, publisher and owner of two weekly newspapers: the Lawrence Business Ledger and the Baldwin Ledger. He eventually sold those papers to The World Company and joined the Journal-World staff in 2001.
Lawhorn, a native of Melvern, earned his journalism degree from Kansas University in 1994. He and his wife, Kristine, live in Eudora with their two children.
