Name: Melinda Hipple
Born: Harrisonville, Mo.
Family: An adult son, Aaron, who lives in California.
Education: Hipple graduated from Harrisonville High School and went three semesters to Southwest Missouri University (now Missouri State). “I got married and left school. In those days, women weren’t supposed to need a college education.”
Ideal job growing up: “An artist. I really wanted to be a writer but didn’t get any support for that.”
Hobbies: “I really enjoy photography. I go out on campus during the summer and dig around looking for bugs.”
Career: Hipple has been the house mother for the Baker University’s Zeta Chi Fraternity for five years.”It’s a great job. They’re a great group of guys.” Digging deeper: Hipple went back to school at Baker three-and-a-half years ago and will graduate in May. She is studying creative writing. “I actually want to be in school this time,” she said. Without family at home, the job as fraternity house mother provides her time for her academic work, Hipple said. “Plus, I have a lot of good study buddies.”
She might consider post-graduate work at some time, but not right away. “I want to apply what I learned with my writing and see if I can make a go of it some way. I’ve had a little success with publication.”
