Baldwin girls bounce back from first defeat to down Anderson County

The Baldwin High School girls forced Anderson County into 19 first-half turnovers as they cruised to a 62-39 victory Tuesday in the Bulldog-Wildcat Classic at Louisburg.

The win improved the Bulldogs’ record to 2-1. The team opened the season last Thursday with a blowout victory against visiting Tonganoxie, 65-19, and opened the tournament Monday with a narrow 60-58 defeat to Chanute.

Baldwin bounced back for the first-game loss, coming out aggressively and putting the game away early. The Bulldogs scored the first 11 points in the game on their way to a 19-6 lead at the end of the first quarter. Anderson County had 12 turnovers in the opening period against Baldwin’s full-court pressure and trapping half-court defense and didn’t get a shot at the basket until six minutes into the game.

Baldwin coach Bob Martin said he was pleased his team’s early determined play after the tough loss to Chanute, in what might be the best game of the girls tournament.

“I thought we bounced back really well,” Martin said. “Last night was a real physical contest. I know we were tired; I know we were sore today. I was happy the way the played and the things they brought,”

The Bulldogs were cold from the outside early, which Martin said could have been a carryover from the night before. His advice to his team was to keep taking open shots with the confidence good shooters would eventually find the mark. The Bulldogs did with senior Kyna Smith connecting on five 3-pointers on her way to a game-high 18 points.

Chanute returned all its starters from the team Baldwin defeated last year in the tournament’s championship game, and the Bulldogs knew the taller Blue Comets would present matchup problems inside. Nonetheless, Martin said the Bulldogs had a lead late in the Chanute game they let get away.

“We turned them over 30 times,” he said. “We did what we had to do.”

Baldwin was in foul trouble in the game and lost key players late in the game. Fouls were a the single concern Tuesday, too, as Anderson County got to the free throw line early and often. Martin said it was an area in which his team needed to improve.

“I think we can play aggressively without fouling or turning the ball over,” he said.
