Face to Face: Laura Beaulieu
Name: Larra Beaulieu
Born: South Bend, Ind. “I moved to Centerville, Iowa, when I was 14. I’m definitely a Notre Dame fan, for sure.”
Family: Husband, Dan, three adult children and three grandchildren.
Education: Centerville High School, bachelor’s from Truman State University and master from MidAmerican Nazarene University in Olathe.
Career: Beaulieu has been the special education teacher at Baldwin High School since 1995. She started work after college as a group home parent in St. Joseph, Mo., for those with disabilities and was attracted to the field because she had an older sister with cerebral palsy. Out of college she was determined not to teach, but started substitute teaching when she moved to Lawrence with her husband as he finished a degree. “I tried it and found I loved it.”
Hobbies: She walks daily with her “mentor” Ginny Honomichl, for whom she served as an assistant tennis coach at BHS for 10 years “even though I didn’t know anything about tennis when I started.”
Digging deeper: She and her husband moved in 1991 to Baldwin City because they were looking for a place their daughters could “ride a bike to the pool and be safe.” It worked out for her. “I love what I do. We live in a wonderful neighborhood with a lot of other teachers.”
