Baldwin High School coach Kit Harris said senior Tucker Clark nearly came away with a huge upset in his Saturday semi-final match against No. 1 ranked Tyler Miles of Andale. Clark lost 10-8, but gave the eventual champion his toughest match of the season and scored a takedown with 10 seconds remaining.

Clark bounced back to easily defeat an Abilene foe, 6-0, before losing in the third-place match at 138 pounds.

Harris said Clark was a team leader all season. He placed in every meet this season, was named to the Kansas Wrestling Coaches Association all-state team and finished as the Bulldogs’ sixth winningest wrestler with a 134-44 career mark.

Junior Jon Pratt (145 pounds) opened at state with a 3-2 win of the state’s No. 4 rated wrestler from Clay Center. After a one-point quarterfinal loss, Pratt won three straight, including two against ranked opponents from Abilene and Wellington. He lost the fourth-place match.

Harris said a tough bracket hurt Owen Tuckfield’s chances of medaling at 160 pounds. The sophomore went 2-2 in the meet. Tuckfield’s history of numerous close matches throughout the season traveled with him to the state meet, where he scored a takedown with seven seconds remaining to earn one of his two wins.

Also advancing to the second day was Freshman Levi Green at 106 pounds. He took a 6-1 win over a senior from Augusta in the first consolation round to advance to day two. Green used his leg attacks to take control of the match and stayed in good position for a controlling win, Harris said.

Ben Morgenstern (113) and Thomas Lisher (126), the team's only other state qualifiers, were eliminated after going 0-2 on Friday.

Holton repeated as the team champ with 114 points, which was 38 more than runner-up Chanute. Baldwin finished 25th with 30 points.
