Baldwin boys surprise with 3rd-place finish at state track

The Baldwin High boys won one gold medal and scored points in seven other event to earn a third-place finish at last weekend’s state 4A track meet in Wichita. “We just had a great meet,” coach Mike Spielman said. “Coming in, it was going to take a lot of work to get a trophy. They just did a great job and were able to get a third-place trophy.”

Two days after the Baldwin High girls defended their 4A state track and field championship in Wichita, coach Ted Zuzzio was still in awe of what his team accomplished. “We won six events,” he said Monday. “That’s unheard of at this level. Eight of the 12 girls we took to Wichita won gold medals. Baldwin’s quality won the championship.

When the 2014 Baldwin High track and field season started, girls coach Ted Zuzzio said it would be his “swan song” before he entered retirement. That theme continued throughout the season and included an announcement the Frontier League meet at Liston Stadium would be his last home meet as coach of the Bulldogs.

Volunteers see community benefits to Baldwin City of foot trail being built at Douglas County State Lake

After a hard Saturday morning of work, Don Phipps and Mike Goodwin rested on a footbridge they installed at Douglas County State Lake. Aided by Stan Vickers, Dave Simmons, Gerard Arantowicz and a walk-behind track loader with multiple frontend attachments, Phipps and Goodwin spent the morning carving out sections of a trail on the west side of the lake. The morning had been productive, with the walking path laid down through prairie and woodlands from the southern end of lake property near North 375 Road to the footbridge spanning a small stream just north of the lake’s southern-most access area.
