Baldwin City commuters who use County Road 1055/Haskell Avenue to get to work In Lawrence may want give themselves extra time starting Monday. Starting at 7 a.m. Monday, northbound and southbound lanes of Haskell Avenue from 27th to 29th streets will close until the spring of 2015 because of construction on Kansas Highway 10 and the South Lawrence Trafficway.

Baldwin City Council moves forward with grant application to upgrade Santa Fe Depot

The Baldwin City Council agreed to go forward Tuesday with a grant application that would make improvements to the grounds at the Santa Fe Depot. The council approved a resolution seeking $140,000 from a Kansas Department of Transportation-administered federal transportation alternatives grant for improvements to the city owned property on High Street.
Baldwin students to start school two days early this fall

The Baldwin school board voted 5-1 on Tuesday to start school two days early next school year to help equalize the fall and spring semesters. The vote comes seven months after the board agreed to shorten the school year by five “student-contact days.” With that decision, schools opened five days later in August for the 2013-2014 school year.
Wind-chill advisory issued for Douglas County

Charge dropped for Baldwin City woman accused of hosting minors consuming alcohol

A judge has dismissed a charge against a Baldwin City woman accused of hosting minors consuming alcohol, citing wording of the statute in question. Sherry L. Haskell had been scheduled for trial this week in Douglas County District Court. Instead, during a hearing Tuesday, Judge Sally Pokorny stood by her decision to dismiss the case despite a motion by the state to reconsider.
Baldwin blows out winless Anderson County in first round of tournament

The Baldwin High School student body’s chants Tuesday for reserve Ian Kirk to enter the game with the start of the fourth quarter was a sign for how thoroughly the Bulldogs dominated Anderson County. Baldwin coach Dustin Leochner would eventually please the students by sending Kirk and other reserves into the waning minutes of the contest the Bulldogs won, 68-37. The timing of their court appearances provided the only second-half drama in a game that was decided when Baldwin raced to a 19-3 lead at the end of the first quarter.
