Baldwin softball team swept by De Soto, Louisburg

The young Baldwin High softball team continued to struggle in Frontier League play, going 0-4 in the last week. Baldwin lost a doubleheader Tuesday at Louisburg, 5-4, 7-4, and was swept at home Thursday by defending 4A state champion De Soto, 12-11, 8-2.

The day before the start of the KU Relays, Baldwin High’s Alexia Stein was ready for the warmer weather and competition she expected to see in Lawrence. To that point, the Bulldog junior hadn’t seen much of either. Stein collected gold in the shot put and discus in her first three meets. That success included first-place finishes against stepped-up competition at the Pre-State Classic in Wichita and the Baker Relays.

Fascination with trains leads to volunteer role at Baldwin City’s Midland Railway

Mike Beem struck up a conversation with a stranger Saturday as they stood on the Santa Fe Depot’s north platform waiting for a Midland Railway train to pull into the station. Words came easy to the two men as they talked trains and railroad. The stranger told Beem, a volunteer with the Midland Railway, he was retired from the Union Pacific Railroad and used to make regular runs through Kansas City west to Marysville.
