The Baldwin High School boys were first and girls second in their first competition of the 2014 season.

The teams opened the year at Liston Stadium on an afternoon temperatures topped out at 50 degrees in the 12-team Baldwin Invitational. The boys scored 113 points to edge Blue Valley Southwest, which finished with 111 points. The defending 4A state champion Bulldog girls racked up 124 points or 13 fewer than first-place Basehor-Linwood.

The 2,000-meter steeple chase, which is only part of the Baldwin Invitational and Baker and Kansas University relays, proved to be the difference of Basehor-Linwood, whose runners finished first, second and sixth, picking up 21 points.

Baldwin senior Ethan Hartzell earned gold in both the 1,600 (4:49.06) and 3,200 (10:07.77) meters with sophomore George Letner fourth in the 3,200 (10:19.79).
