Undefeated Baldwin in showdown with De Soto today
The undefeated Baldwin High School boys soccer team tuned up for its showdown with De Soto with a 3-1 victory last Thursday against Spring Hill and a 4-0 shutout of K.C. Piper during a rare Saturday match. Both contests were on the road.
Providing the offensive punch last Thursday for the Bulldogs was Joel Dixon, who scored all three of Baldwin’s goals. Duncan Murray and Hunter Young were credited with assists.
Coach Mark Joslyn said the team displayed excellent ball movement against the Broncos.
“Joel found the cracks in the defense and exploited the mistakes by Spring Hill defenders,” he said. “It was an excellent win for the squad.”
Baldwin broke open Saturday’s game after a scoreless first half. Duncan Murry got the first and game-winning goal on an assist from Dixon. Dixon then scored the next two goals with Nick Joslyn earning as assist on one score. Brendan Owning scored the final goal on an assist from Nate Clem.
“Our passing game wore Piper down and by the second half we were able to capitalize on several mistakes by the defense and also find significant gaps in their back line,” coach Joslyn said.
The defensive back line of Austin Chapman, Hunter Young, Karily Fiske, Ben Growcock, Guillermo Fernandez and goalkeeper Tyler Courtney played well in both matches, coach Joslyn said.
The Bulldogs play De Soto today at 4 p.m. at the soccer field north of the high school parking lot. De Soto was responsible for both of Baldwin’s regular season losses last year.
