October 17, 2013

The Douglas County Health Department will have flu shot available from 3 to 5 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 24, at the Baldwin City Recreation Commission office, 705 High St.

The Health Department also offers flu shots on a walk-in basis during clinic

hours. No appointment is necessary.

The shots will be given on a walk-in basis, so no appointment in needed. The cost of the shots is $25 for children ages 6 months to 35 months and $30 for those 3 years of age or older. C

Clients eligible for Medicare Part-B, HealthWave, Medicaid and

Blue Cross/Blue Shield can receive the flu shot at no charge if they bring their

card at the time of vaccination.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that everyone 6

months of age and older should get a yearly flu vaccine. Getting the vaccination

is the most effective way to avoid getting the flu, a contagious respiratory illness.

Influenza can cause mild to severe symptoms and can lead to death. More than

30,000 people die each year from flu complications and more than 200,000

people are hospitalized. Those most at-risk are infants and young children, older

adults and pregnant women.
