Baldwin grinds out win to advance in football playoffs
Tonganoxie — Baldwin High led Tonganoxie by just four points early in the fourth quarter, but scored two late touchdowns for a 28-10 win in the regional round of the Class 4A playoffs Saturday at Beatty Field.
The Bulldogs (11-0) amassed 331 yards of offense and limited the Chieftains (9-2) to 166 to keep their perfect season alive.
THS scored on its first possession when quarterback Tyler Ford hooked up with Ben Johnson for a 30-yard touchdown pass, then Jared Sommers intercepted Baldwin quarterback Chad Berg in BHS territory on the next possession. The Chieftains couldn’t capitalize on the short field, though, and BHS evened the score on a 47-yard run by Joel Katzer late in the first quarter.

The Bulldogs went in front on a 10-yard score by Jake Katzer midway through the second quarter, and THS cut the deficit to four on a 22-yard field goal by Eric Tate on its next drive. Baldwin got a chance to score again just before the break, but the Chieftains came up with a fourth-down stop inside their own 10-yard line.
Baldwin took its 14-10 lead into the fourth quarter and made it a two-score game on a 10-yard touchdown run by Jake Katzer with 10:11 remaining. The defense forced a turnover-on-downs on the ensuing possession, then Cornell Brown put the game on ice with a three-yard score in the final minutes.
Brown led the Bulldog rushing attack with 126 yards, and Joel Katzer added 96. Ford threw for 118 yards in the loss. THS entered the game averaging nearly 300 rushing yards per contest, but finished with just 48, including 42 by Cole Holloway.
With the win, Baldwin advances to the sectional round. It will travel Friday to Coffeyville-Field Kindley (10-1). The Golden Tornado advanced with a 42-21 win Saturday against Chanute.
