Baldwin track teams capture league titles
The Baldwin High School girls and boys track teams outpointed nemesis Paola to claim Frontier League titles Thursday at Louisburg.
The girls won by the thinnest of margins, finishing with 173 points to Panthers’ 172. Third-place De Soto had 74.5 points.
The Baldwin boys defended their league title by turning back strong challenges from Paola and Ottawa. The Bulldogs 124 points were four more than Paola’s total and eight more than Ottawa earned.
“Going into the meet, the team probably projected to be third,” boys coach Mike Spielman said. “The field events were again solid for us, but the track was were we made a big push. We had to guys score in the 100-, 200-, 400- and 3,200-meters and the 300-meter hurdles. That helped us in the standings and then we capped it off with a big win in the mile relay.”
Baldwin and Paola athletes contested nearly every event as they battled for the girls team title. The Bulldogs’ Katie Kehl and Paola’s Kelsey Slawson split the shot put and discus title. Kehl beat her rival in the discus, but came up short in the shot put.
It was a big day for Bulldogs sprinters on both Baldwin teams.
Baldwin senior Glenn Kelley McCabe and freshman Carlyn Cole were first and second in the 100 meters, and McCabe and sophomore Morgan Lober duplicated the feat in the 400 meters.
Paola junior Lauren Frederick wan the 200-meter dash with Baldwin freshmen Carlyn Cole and Kyna Smith finished second and third, respectively.
Kaitlyn Barnes defeated Paola’s Kaylee Farmer to win at 800 meters and the Panthers’ Rebecca Wright to win at 1,600 meters.
Once again, the Baldwin girls teams won gold in the 4x100- and 4x400-meter relays with Paola earning silver medals. The Bulldogs 4x800-meter relay team finished second to a Panther team.
Senior Mark Harman was the only Bulldog to win an individual gold medal with a victory in the 300-meter hurdles (41.62). The Baldwin relay teams won the 4x100- and 4x400-meter relays and were second to De Soto in the 4x800 relay.
