Baldwin City man arrested after apparently crashing car in Lawrence
Douglas County prosecutors have charged a 22-year-old Baldwin City man with several offenses in connection with a police pursuit that ended late Monday night with a car accident on the Haskell Indian Nations University campus.
Darron Jacob Harvey was arrested about midnight Monday after allegedly fleeing a traffic stop about and driving nearly 100 mph through a residential neighborhood and leaving the scene of an accident on the campus.
The incident began about 11:40 p.m. Monday, when a Lawrence police officer stopped a 2002 white Chevy Impala near 21st and Iowa streets, said Sgt. Trent McKinley, a Lawrence Police Department spokesman. The officer smelled what he believed to be marijuana in the car and asked the driver to step out.
Instead of stepping out, the driver sped away east on 21st Street. The officer pursued the Impala for a short distance before giving up the chase because the driver was fleeing at an extremely high speed, McKinley said. Police believe the Impala then drove through a yard at 21st and Barker Avenue before turning south on Barker, entering the Haskell campus, and striking a tree, light pole and sign. The vehicle was damaged and disabled from those impacts, McKinley said, and the driver fled on foot.
Police arrested Darron Jacob Harvey near the football stadium a short time later, and took him to Lawrence Memorial Hospital to be checked for injuries. Harvey was booked into Douglas County Jail, where he remained Tuesday.
In Douglas County District Court Tuesday afternoon, Harvey appeared via video from the jail and was charged with felony fleeing and eluding, felony obstruction, misdemeanor obstruction, possession of marijuana, reckless driving, driving with a suspended license, and two counts of a leaving the scene of an accident.
Douglas County prosecutors said Harvey was on probation in Finney County for a drug offense at the time of his arrest. Douglas County pro-tem Judge James George set bond in the case at $20,000.
