One of the first Baldwin High School sports teams to jump into competition once school starts in August had a successful summer.

“We don’t keep stats during the summer, so it’s kind of hard to pinpoint individuals,” Brown said. “But the girls played very well throughout the league.”

The team returns plenty of talent from last year, which was Brown’s first year back after as coach after taking a number years off from an earlier successful stint in the position. Among the returners will be junior Jordan Hoffman, junior Corey Valentine, the team’s assist leader from last year, junior middle hitters Morgan Lober and Alexia Stein and senior libero Madeline McCrary.

Also playing with the varsity in summer league were Mickayla Starkey and Madi Taylor, who is new to the district.

“This team has put in a lot of work during the off season, and it shows,” Brown said. “They have been involved with our volleyball workouts since the first of June, and several of the girls played club volleyball this winter, as well. They came into league aggressive and confident. Attacking the ball will definitely be a strength of ours this year. Throughout league, we managed to control the pass, which allowed us to be aggressive in our attack and to take advantage of all of our hitters.”

The Bulldog sophomores had a successful season as well, finishing league with a 13-11 record, Brown said. The freshmen competing in the junior varsity division showed the most improvement during the summer, she said.

“Our main goal for them this summer is to get them familiar with the system we use at the high school,” Brown said.

The coaching staff has a few more weeks during which it can work with the team this summer, Brown said. The Baldwin High School volleyball camp will be July 15-19.

Fall practices start Aug. 19.
