Baldwin girls drop third stright

February 13, 2013

Louisburg — The Baldwin girls lost their third game in a row, dropping a 47-40 game to a Louisburg team it had beaten twice this season.

In a bad recipe for success, a Baldwin team struggling with confidence ran into a Louisburg team that started the game red-hot.

“They hit a lot of big shots in the first quarter, and we couldn’t hit anything late,” Baldwin coach Bob Martin said. “That was about the story.”

Louisburg’s Brook Vaughn and Bailey Drovak did the damage early, helping the Wildcats to a 16-9 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The Bulldogs bounced back in the second quarter, fighting Louisburg to a 14-14 draw for the period. But Baldwin’s frequent offensive woes surfaced in the team’s six-point third quarter in which the Bulldogs couldn’t make up any ground on the Wildcats despite holding the home team to eight points.

Trailing 40-29 at the start of the fourth quarter, the Bulldogs went to a full-court press in an attempt to get back in the game. The strategy gave Baldwin a chance. Sophomore Maddie Ogle scored two-straight layups off the press, cutting the lead to 42-37 with 2:22 to play.

The Bulldogs would force another turnover on the next possession but was unable to convert at the rim. Louisburg then scored the next four points to rebuild its lead.

The loss to a team Baldwin had beaten in the consolation game of the December’s Bulldog/Wildcat Classic and in league play in January dropped the Bulldogs record to 11-6 and 5-4 in Frontier League. The team in need of a victory with regain its January swagger will have that opportunity Friday against Ottawa, another team Baldwin beat in January.

The game will be the Bulldogs’ senior night and the last home game for Callie Enich, Kelsey Dighans, Jessie Katzer, Katie Kehl, Kaitlin Jorgensen, Bailey Smith and Kailyn Smith.
