Baldwin boys squeak by Paola
Paola — Baldwin junior Chad Berg hit a running jumper in the lane with 2 seconds on the clock, giving the Bulldogs a 64-62 victory at Paola.
The contest was back and forth throughout with 12 lead changes in the game. Paola’s Jeremy Criddle knotted the game at 62 all with a steal and a layup with 43 seconds remaining, setting up the Bulldog’s final possession.
"Both teams were making plays and making shots," Baldwin coach Dustin Leochner said. "Those are fun. Those are fun ones to win."
Leochner called two timeouts during Baldwin' last possession, originally calling for a backdoor play but getting out of that when he felt Paola had "sniffed" it out. The last possession was designed for Berg to drive the lane and kick to a shooter, but the junior took advantage of an opening.
"Chad ripped it in the lane and hit a huge shot," Leochner said. "That's what good players do."
Baldwin faced its biggest deficit of the night 56-48 with inside 6 minutes to play in the game. Leochner said he went with a smaller lineup in the hopes the Baldwin press would turn the Panthers over. It worked.
Luke Fursman's two field goals, another by Quinn Twombly and Tim Craig three free throws after being fouled on a 3-shot put the Bulldogs ahead 57-56 with 3:36 remaining.
After Paola got its last lead of the game on a Luke Wilson field goal, Fursman put Baldwin ahead for good with this third 3-pointer of the night 2:24 to play.
