Baker volleyball team 4-4 after tourney

BELLEVUE, Neb. – The Baker University volleyball team dropped the final two matches of the Bellevue University tournament on Saturday to fall to 4-4 overall on the season.

The Wildcats fell to Dordt College in four sets, 25-20, 22-25, 25-16, 25-21 and dropped the final match of the tourney against Doane in three sets, 17-25, 24-26, 16-25.

Dordt posted 14.5 team blocks in its win over Baker and Crystal Simon’s 13 kills weren’t enough to lead the Wildcats past DC.

Jana Boss had another double-double with 11 kills and 34 assists and Danielle French supplied Baker with nine kills and a service ace.

The Wildcats began the day with a three set win over Concordia (Neb.), 25-21, 25-16, 25-20 and followed that up with a thrilling five set win over Briar Cliff, 18-25, 22-25, 25-5, 25-22, 15-13.

In the first match of the day against Concordia, the Wildcats hit .255 as a team and Crystal Simon led the way with eight kills.

The Wildcats assists leader Jana Boss spread the ball around on offense with 23 assists. Savannah Smith slammed home seven kills and with teammate Danielle French matched her with seven of her own and posted the highest hitting percentage of the match for Baker at .286.

Reigning HAAC Libero of the Week, Renata Dill had a team high 11 digs, Boss joined her on the night with 11 digs herself.

After two disappointing sets against Briar Cliff, the Wildcats stormed back to roll past the Chargers in the third set 25-5, then held on for the victory in the fourth and fifth decisive sets.

Boss played an outstanding match with a double-double, 12 kills and 34 assists and as a team the Wildcats collected 17 team blocks.

Baker collected 90 total digs with Dill grabbing 32, Simon had 20 and Taryn Brees added 12.

Baker also had nine service aces against Briar Cliff, with Smith leading the way with four and teammates Shannon Bond and Danielle French each posted two service aces.

French led the Wildcats in kills with eight against Doane and Renata Dill had 15 digs, while Boss added 25 assists.

Doane posted a hitting percentage of .336 and teammates Susan Rollman and Ashley Axxman had a team high 11 kills.

Baker will return home for its home opener nextThursday Sept. 6 as they take on William Woods at 7 p.m. at Collins Gym.
