Baker women win; BU athletes honored by HAAC
No. 14 Baker women cruise past Ottawa 3-1
The game itself was never really in question as the 14th-ranked Baker University women's soccer team improved to 5-1 on Sunday evening at Liston Stadium.
Alix Schiraldi put the Wildcats on the scoreboard first with a header on a corner kick from Jordan Dolbin at 10:55.
Bre Hoener would add another goal at 34:02 on a blast from 30-yards out past a diving Lauren Peli, who was pulled immediately after.
Autumn Surage gave Ottawa its only goal of the contest three minutes later, but Schiraldi closed out the game in the 85th minute when she weaved through two Ottawa defenders to give BU a 3-1 victory.
The Wildcats will return to action on Sept. 27 against Oklahoma Wesleyan University at 5 p.m. from Liston Stadium.
Boss and Allen named HAAC Players of the Week
Baker University junior Jana Boss (Shawnee Mission) and senior Brooke Allen (Topeka) have been named HAAC Volleyball Setter of the Week and HAAC Libero of the Week, respectively, as announced by the league office on Monday afternoon.
Boss claimed her second weekly setter award in three weeks as the Wildcats posted a 4-2 record last week. She had a pair of 40-plus assist performances, including 41 assists and 19 digs in a five-set win over Grand View (Iowa). She also had 11 kills, 36 assists, 12 digs and one block in a 3-1 win over NCAA DII Southwest Baptist.
Allen also claimed her second weekly libero award of the season after averaging 6.83 digs per set. Allen finished four matches with over 30 digs and had a week-high 34 digs in just four sets against Southwest Baptist while committing just two reception errors in 130 chances for the week, good for a .985 percentage.
The Wildcats return to action on Sept. 20 when they travel to Ottawa University of a 7 p.m. start.
Donny George named HAAC Defensive Player of the Week
Baker sophomore Donny George (London) has been chosen as the Heart of America Athletic Conference Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week, the league office announced on Monday.
George proved to be a threat on both ends of the field last week as he scored goals against 16th-ranked Oklahoma Baptist University in a 5-0 rout, and Midland Lutheran (Neb.) in a 4-2 victory. The Baker men are currently ranked 13th nationally with an undefeated 8-0 record.
With the award, George will represent the HAAC in the weekly selection process of the NAIA Defensive Player of the Week award, which will be announced Monday evening.
