Column: Time to support the Bulldogs
Baldwin High School sports fans: It's time to get outside and cheer on your Bulldogs tonight, Friday and Saturday.
Postseason time is upon us and your Bulldogs need support right now. They have worked hard enough and performed well enough to attract support from the local patrons.
It all starts tonight at Liston Stadium. The 6-2 BHS football team hosts rival Eudora, who's 7-1 and riding a six-game winning streak. Baldwin is on a five-game winning streak, so one of the two Frontier League teams will end its regular season with a loss.
The Baldwin-Eudora rivalry is always a fun one and the games usually impact the postseason. This year is no exception. The winner moves on to a home game Tuesday, while the loser plays on the road.
It will be chilly tonight at Liston Stadium, so bundle up and come cheer on the Bulldogs. They might not be as big as past years, but they the ability to score a touchdown on every offensive play. They've got playmakers that are fun to watch and they're young so the future is bright.
Kick off is at 7 p.m. I hope to see you there.
The action doesn't stop tonight. In fact, it keeps rolling Friday and Saturday. The BHS boys' soccer team hosts Independence at 4 p.m. Friday at the Bulldogs' field north of the school. The winner will move on to the state quarterfinals next week.
Baldwin is 13-3-1 and on a seven-game winning streak right now. BHS has won 12 of its last 13 games since starting the season 1-2-1. It's a team full of upperclassmen, but it also has some youthful players who start and make serious impacts on the game.
The Bulldogs are one of the best possessive teams in the state. It's fun to watch the passes and they know how to control the ball in their favor. The Bulldogs can also play physical. By nature, they aren't a tough hitting team that aims to knock you out, but they will play tough and it's fun to watch.
I'll admit, I'm a bigger fan of football than soccer, but it's been a blast watching soccer this fall. Baldwin and Baker are having solid seasons, so some cheer on the Bulldogs on Friday.
In case you haven't had enough by Friday evening, two more BHS teams could use support and they've earned it. The BHS cross country teams will be competing at the state meet in Wamego Saturday morning at 10 and 11:30 a.m.
Dozens of fans usually attend the meet and they get their exercise for the day chasing the Bulldogs around the course. Hopefully more come out this year. If you do, you might witness the BHS girls win their fifth-consecutive state championship. They've won four in a row and have a great shot at winning another one.
The BHS boys will also be running. They are defending state champs, but a repeat could be tough this year. I think the boys would be happy if they earn a trophy for a top-three finish. If senior Brian Wright is feeling good, a trophy could be in the bag, if not, his teammates will need to continue running well. They have three strong front runners and some younger guys moving up in the fourth through seven spots. It should be fun to watch.
Well, I hope I see many of you tonight and the next two days. Good luck Bulldogs!
