Athletic trainer at Baker named top in Kansas

Mark Stutz, assistant professor and chair of the department of health, sport, and human performance at Baker University, has been selected as the Athletic Trainer of the Year by the Kansas Athletic Trainers’ Society.

BHS boys basketball coaches resign together

Less than a month after the season finished, all three Baldwin High School boys’ basketball coaches resigned from their sideline duties. Head coach Eric Toot and assistants Chad Scoby and Jason Crowder made it official before USD 348’s spring break started two weeks ago.
BHS tennis, track teams enjoying warm weather

This year’s March weather has been unusual, but in a good way for the Baldwin High School boys’ tennis team and track and field teams. The Bulldogs have been practicing outside during the first three weeks of the 2011 season, which is unusual for early season practices.
BHS alumnus aims at turning around baseball team

Baldwin High School alumnus Brian Turk hopes to lead the Bulldogs’ baseball team to its first winning season in five years. He knows to achieve the players’ goal of their first winning season as Baldwin it will take a change of attitude and dedication to improving every day. That’s what he has been working on since practice started for his inaugural season at the beginning of the month.
Softball squad ready to open season at home Tuesday

During her first few weeks as a head coach, Ginger Crist is trying to instill a new mindset in her Baldwin High School softball players. Crist was hired as the third BHS softball coach in its decade of existence. She was hired months ago, but the season didn’t begin until the beginning of the month.
Knights of Columbus hosting fish fry Friday

The Baldwin City Knights of Columbus are preparing to cook up another season of Lenten fish fries. Friday marks the first fish fry at the Annunciation Catholic Church in Baldwin City, although a fish fry took place March 11 at the Catholic Church in Edgerton.
Vinland Fair Board already planning for summer

When the Vinland Community Fair began in the late 1800s and early 1900s, the one-day fair was one of the social events of the year. Lines of people stretch down the gravel road at recent year’s fairs while waiting to purchase homemade chicken noodle dinners and anywhere from 1,000 to 1,300 are sold on a Friday night.
BHS seniors taking presidential longshot

For two Baldwin High School seniors, an idea quickly turned into an opportunity to bring President Barack Obama to speak at the high school commencement ceremony. While a discussion about getting a commencement speaker arose during the government class seniors Alex Daffern and Ann Wallsmith attend, a counselor joked Obama should speak to the senior class.
School board candidates answer questions at public forum

All 10 USD 348 Board of Education candidates for the April 5 election had their chance to answer questions in front of voters Tuesday night. It was their first time to appear in public as a group since they filed for the election in January.
City council enters into water agreement with De Soto

After months of discussion and engineering studies, Baldwin City and De Soto city councils are partnering together to create a new water authority. On Monday night, the Baldwin City Council unanimously voted to enter into an agreement to form the Sunflower Public Water and Utility Authority with De Soto.
